When Chappell Roan attends an event, you can bet she’s going all out. Boring is not in her vocabulary! VMAs 2024Chappell did just that – she killedbut not only in the way you think. For her performance and her appearance on the red carpet, the artist seemed to be “Joan of Arc if she had a Sephora account” and fully embodied a Gothicmedieval look (yes, sword nails, etc.). And despite how it may look, it’s actually surprisingly easy to recreate. Chappell’s glamour has been achieved by all MAC Cosmetics products, yes, even their essential eye makeup!!
Chappell Roan’s appearance is always whimsically unexpected (remember her Statue of Liberty Cosplay she wore to the Gov Ball?!). And while she definitely brought drama to this year’s VMAs, I’d argue her makeup look is in line with fall’s biggest beauty trends. Anyone up for some dark academic vibes (with a hint of the Dark Ages)?
So how can you get the red carpet look at home? Makeup artist Andrew Dahling broke down the variety of MAC Cosmetics products the star used, including viral favorites like the Studio Fix Fluid 24-hour Matte Foundation and the viral MACXimal Silky Matte Lipsticks. Scroll down to see the full tutorial on how to embody the Midwest Princess’ VMA look.
EYES
The eyes say it all! Arguably the most important part of Chappell’s look is her eye makeup. For the occasion, Dahling created a not-so-typical smokey eye consisting of gold, silver, and pink eyeshadow glitter blended up to her brow bone. The contrast of the mixed metallics gave her eyes a beautiful accent, with the gold eyeshadow applied to her lower waterline and inner corner of her eye, while the silver and pink shadows sat at the top center of her eyelid, creating an icy—dare I say—armor-like look. As for her white Snow Queen mascara, this Macstack mascara achieves the same bold look.
LIPS
To create the magic, two lipstick shades were used: Velvet Teddy and Sin. These two were combined to create a deep wine-colored stain look. Dahling also lined Chappell’s lips with MAC’s Lipstick in Auburn and topped it off by applying the shade Nightmoth down the center of her lip, resulting in a dark ombre-like finish that just exuded medieval gothcore so exquisitely *kiss from the boss!!!*.
FACE
It wouldn’t be a Chappell Roan makeup tutorial without her signature porcelain-colored foundation. In addition to her foundation and concealer, Dahling also blended the base products with MAC’s white color pencil (which is currently sold out, but there are tons of similar artist colors online, like this one from Haus Labs). Since her eye and lip makeup is the focus of the show, the focus here was on the dewy, glowing skin that tied everything together and made the contrast even more apparent.
