Chapel Hill police charge Moore County man with manslaughter

Chapel Hill police have charged a Moore County man in the death of 55-year-old Michael Jesse Griffin. Griffin, a Chapel Hill resident, died Sept. 13 after an attack.

Cody Ray Callahan, 19, of Carthage, is charged with voluntary manslaughter, simple assault and false imprisonment. According to police, Callahan attacked Griffin on Saturday, September 7, around 7:40 p.m. Officers said an investigation revealed that Callahan injured Griffin, who was trying to stop Callahan from attacking another man. Griffin was then transported to UNC Hospitals, where he died six days later.

Callahan is currently being held in the Moore County Jail under a $500,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Orange County Court on Monday, October 7 at 9 a.m.
