Chants greet Old Dominion for Saturday night’s Sun Belt opener

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers open Sun Belt Conference play Saturday night as the Chants host Old Dominion at Brooks Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET. Kyle Rush, Nate Ross and Joanne Bethea will host the conversation on ESPN+. CCU fans can listen to the Chanticleer Sports Radio Network broadcast with Chris Burgin, Layne Harris, Joe Catenacci and Sam Weiderhaft on WRNN 99.5 FM and online at wrnn.net.

• Wide receiver Bryson Graves had a career day for the Chanticleers against Virginia.

• Graves had four catches for 40 yards, both career highs, and scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 15-yard reception.

ON THE STALK
• Linebackers Shane Bruce He reached a career high in tackles against Virginia and totaled 11 stops for the third time in his career.

• Bruce combined for 20 tackles against Temple and Virginia, the most in a two-game stretch of his career.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME

• The legendary Surf Turf at Brooks Stadium has become one of the toughest places in the country for opponents to win.

• Since 2020, Coastal has a remarkable record of 23-5 (82.1%) in home games.

• CCU is tied for the 12th-most home wins in the overall FBS rankings since 2020, trailing only Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, UTSA, Michigan, Oklahoma State, NC State, Liberty, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Missouri.

• Coastal has a 4-3 all-time record in Sun Belt Conference openers.

• The Chanticleers are 14-6 all-time in conference openers and have never lost conference openers in back-to-back seasons

• With their 3-1 record this season, the Chants are 42-13 overall since the start of the 2020 season.

• The 42-13 record since the start of the 2020 season represents the seventh-most wins in all of FBS football, trailing only Georgia, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Liberty and Notre Dame.

• CCU drew a program-record 22,104 fans against Virginia, while the 19,294 fans for the home opener against William & Mary marked the fourth-largest attendance ever.

• Coastal Carolina’s offensive line was one of the most consistent in the country, ranking fourth nationally in tackles for loss allowed per game and sixth in sacks allowed per game.

• The only programs ahead of the Chanticleers in both categories are Army and New Mexico.

In search of the monarchs of the old reign
• Old Dominion is 1-3 and is coming off a 30-27 win over Bowling Green.

• Quarterback Grant Wilson has thrown a touchdown pass in 10 consecutive games for the Monarchs.

• Through four games, Old Dominion’s defense ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference with six interceptions.

• Safety Jahron Manning became the first Monarch since 2014 to record two interceptions in a two-pick game against East Carolina.

• Running back Aaron Young leads the ODU ground game with 280 yards on 70 carries and two touchdowns so far this season and ranks third in the conference with 70.0 rushing yards per game.

• Linebacker Koa Naotala leads the Sun Belt with 10.3 tackles per game, making him the only player in the conference to average double-digit stops per contest.

• Old Dominion enters the game with three of the conference’s top four tacklers, while Manning (9.3) and fellow linebacker Mario Thompson (9.0) rank second and fourth in the league.

• Old Dominion has blocked 13 kicks since the start of the 2021 season, including two so far this year.
