Cash and Diet Coke stolen after car crashes into South Nashville coffee shop

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Surveillance video captures the moment someone drove a car into the front of Red Bicycle Coffee & Crepes on Nolensville Pike in South Nashville on Friday.

The video shows a person wearing dark clothing, a mask and what looks like gloves. The person takes cash from a cash register, according to police, and then drinks something from a nearby cooler before running out of the frame. The owner, Luis Cortes, said it was a Diet Coke that was stolen.

Cortes said he was shocked to learn what had happened when officers from the Metro Nashville Police Department knocked on his door around 4 a.m.

“We’ve put all our savings, all our blood, sweat and tears into this special business that’s growing here, so it’s heartbreaking for us to come in here and see that someone hasn’t cared about the hard work that’s gone into this,” Luis Cortes said.

This Red Bicycle Coffee & Crepes has been at the Nolensville Pike location since October 2015. Cortes said this was the second time a car had driven into the building, but the first time it was an accident.

“The first time it was an accident. This was intentional, but it was simply due to the nature of our parking lot. This is probably the second time this month, but this was intentional, so not like the other times.”

Cortes said he plans to speak with the council member about what can be done to prevent this from happening to another small business owner. In the meantime, his team has already started cleanup, he said.

According to police, it was a gray sedan that crashed into the front double doors of the cafe.
