Carthage man arrested and charged with assault in Chapel Hill

A police investigation into an assault earlier this month in Chapel Hill led to an arrest in Moore County on Wednesday. Cody Callahan, 19, of Carthage, is charged with involuntary manslaughter, simple assault and false imprisonment.

According to the Chapel Hill Police Department, Callahan allegedly attacked 55-year-old Michael Griffin of Chapel Hill on E. Rosemary Street on September 7 around 7:40 p.m. The investigation revealed that Callahan allegedly injured Griffin, who was trying to stop Callahan from attacking another man, according to Chapel Hill police. Griffin was transported to UNC Hospitals, where he died on September 13th.

Callahan is being held at the Moore County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court in Orange County on Oct. 7.

Defendants charged with criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
