Camila Cabello’s era as a blonde bombshell is officially over. The singer was the epitome of gothic glamour when she returned to the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, September 11. Anticipation for her performance was already huge, thanks to the network’s decision to include Cabello’s ex-boyfriend Shawn Mendes and Sabrina Carpenter on the performance list, while “Short n’ Sweet” came out, which fans say is a nod to a love triangle between the three.

Cabello, who is nominated in the Best Pop category, made sure all eyes were on her as she looked like Wednesday Addams at the 2024 MTV VMAs in a gothic wedding-inspired outfit, including a sheer black veil and a lace dress that looked like it was embroidered with cobwebs.

Cabello’s signature brunette locks were back as she posed on the red carpet ahead of her appearance. She wore a black semi-sheer Tony Ward Fall-Winter 2024 Couture gown with an asymmetric neckline and a dramatic overlay of black lace and nude mesh. As she moved, the dress subtly sparkled with rhinestones that looked like they had been sewn into the intricate mesh-like design.

Sheer embroidered sleeves that covered her fingers and a sheer black mesh veil that reached almost to her knees added drama—and a marriage-worthy vibe—to her VMAs look. Cabello took cues from the goth aesthetic for her accessories and beauty look, covering her neck with a black leather choker and cross necklace combo and wearing a nude pout paired with sultry smokey eyes.

Cabello last performed at the VMAs in 2021, two years after she and Mendes rocked the stage with a saucy performance of their duet “Señorita.” Mendes, who was still dating the former Fifth Harmony star at the time, also performed shortly after Cabello sang “Don’t Go Yet.” While she wore a flamenco-inspired, asymmetrical ruffled pink and black dress onstage (a very different look from her 2024 VMAs gown), the “He Knows” singer put a colorful spin on the flirty red carpet style trend in a two-tone dress with Barbie pink and red tones, a giant bow in the front and a chiffon skirt. Her then-dark brown locks were styled in a sleek, low bun with a center part, and she matched her pink eyeshadow and blush to the silk bustier of her architectural gown.
