Calls for investigation into Con Edison prices following recent report by Congressman Ritchie Torres

NEW YORK (WABC) — A new look at Con Ed’s pricing brings the energy provider under criticism.

A report by Congressman Ritchie Torres found that Con Ed customers pay twice as much as customers with service from National Grid.

The report cites a comparative analysis showing that a property in the Bronx pays ConEd $1.29 per therm for delivery, while a property in Brooklyn pays National Grid $0.54 per therm for delivery.

Torres is calling on the New York Public Service Commission to investigate the case.

A statement said:

“The following report concludes that the delivery fees Con Ed charges customers in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens are not remotely fair or reasonable.”

Con Ed subsequently released a statement saying:

“Energy prices vary from utility to utility for many reasons, including service levels, customer needs, region specifics and when new prices take effect. As we transition from fossil fuels to clean energy, we invest about $1 billion annually to keep our gas system safe. We replace 80 miles of cast iron and steel mains annually, conduct monthly leak inspections and install the first-of-its-kind gas detector in our customers’ homes and businesses – a tremendous step forward in safety. We promote reforms that reduce natural gas consumption and provide customers with clean energy alternatives.”
