Browns HC Kevin Stefanski says after Deshaun Watson’s poor loss: “We’re not changing QBs.”

The lingering problems quickly surfaced Sunday when the Watson-led offense went three times out of bounds on five of its eight first-half possessions, resulting in a 24-3 halftime deficit. They didn’t reach the red zone until their first possession of the third quarter, which ended with a chip-shot field goal, and Watson’s lost fumble on a sack later in the frame contributed to the eventual breakup.

The Browns yielded just 212 yards on offense against the Commanders’ defense, which was allowing 357.0 yards and 25.5 points per game entering Week 4. Cleveland has yet to surpass the 20-point or 300-yard mark in 2024, becoming just the sixth team since 2000 to go below that threshold in the first five games of a season.

Watson, who completed 15 of 28 passes for 125 yards with a garbage-time touchdown late in the game, couldn’t pinpoint the reason for Cleveland’s continued woes.

“We just have to find the rhythm,” Watson told reporters. “I think we need to figure out what we’re great at, what we’re good at, and perfect that.”

The Browns offense didn’t play well overall. An inconsistent rush made life difficult for the passing game and a stymied offensive line continued to put constant pressure on Watson. Going 1 of 13 on third downs and a game-high nine penalties, the Browns were constantly in an uphill battle.

Stefanski said he considered taking Watson out of the game in the fourth quarter because the contest got out of hand. That ultimately didn’t happen, but Sunday’s poor performance may increase calls for a big change.

“At the end of the day, we just have to keep going with what the defense gives us,” Watson said. “I am satisfied with the coach’s decision. Like I said, we don’t listen to the outside world, no matter what it is. All I can worry about is what I can control.”

The Browns will complete a three-game road stretch next Sunday when they face the Eagles (2-2) in Week 6.
