Britney Spears pays tribute to Sabrina Carpenter after the pop star paid homage to Spears during her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night.
“Sometimes I forget that I’m famous because I’m a mom, I’m pretty old, blah blah blah. But I thought it was kind of cool,” Spears said in an Instagram video on Thursday. “She made me cool.”
Carpenter, who dominated summer radio with her disco-pop hit “Espresso,” performed a medley of her recent hits, including “Taste” and “Please Please Please.”
The 25-year-old singer kicked off her VMA performance by dangling from a giant diamond in the air before descending onto the stage and dancing alongside astronauts and a person in an alien costume – who she then proceeded to make out with.

During the transition between “Please Please Please” and “Taste,” Carpenter paid tribute to the “…Baby One More Time” singer. As one of Carpenter’s astronaut dancers took the stage, a snippet of Spears’ voiceover from her 2000 song “Oops!… I Did it Again” played.
In the voiceover of “Oops!”, Spears speaks to a man who tries to win her affection with the Heart of the Ocean diamond from the movie Titanic. In the song’s space-themed music video, the man is seen wearing an astronaut suit.
While Spears said she was confused by the alien dancer in Carpenter’s performance, she raved about the “Feather” singer.
“I adore her,” Spears said. “I love her to death.”
Sabrina Carpenter wins first VMA award
In addition to a breathtaking performance at the UBS Arena in New York, Carpenter also took home her first moon man at the 2024 VMAs.
Carpenter won the award for Song of the Year for “Espresso.” The song peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and its music video has been viewed over 160 million times online.

“I’ve literally never won one of these,” said Carpenter, who thanked her fans and her “cats and dogs that are at home watching” before quipping, “And thanks for that espresso.”
