A bizarre situation occurred during the 49ers’ final practice of the week before Sunday’s game against the Patriots.

Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk had a confrontation with head coach Kyle Shanahan over shorts. In a video shot by Grant Cohn and shared on social media, the head coach was seen aggressively pointing at Aiyuk’s shorts at one point.

Later, Shanahan walked away from the star receiver before talking to Aiyuk again when Aiyuk appeared to want to say something to him. The two chatted for nearly a minute after Shanahan rejoined the conversation, each of them making arm gestures.

It was unknown what Shanahan and Aiyuk told each other. However, Aiyuk was the only 49ers player in the clip wearing red shorts, while everyone else wore black shorts.

As the conversation between Shanahan and Aiyuk ended, the recipient took off his red shorts and put on a black pair. At one point he appeared to have gone overboard, taking off his shorts and making a kicking motion.

After the San Francisco crackdown, Shanahan confirmed that it was over Aiyuk’s shorts.

“Yes, he did. Good question,” Shanahan told reporters when asked if the problem with Aiyuk was that she wore the wrong shorts.

However, don’t expect Aiyuk to ever miss any time in Sunday’s game against the Patriots for disciplinary reasons.

“No,” Shanahan said with a grin when asked if Aiyuk would be disciplined. “I wish I could wear different shorts.”

Aiyuk’s temper tantrum at practice on Friday isn’t the only notable storyline surrounding his entry into Sunday’s game. If you recall, the Patriots and 49ers reportedly agreed to terms on a trade for the receiver in August. However, Aiyuk showed no interest in a long-term contract extension with the Patriots.

After weeks of training during 49ers training camp, Aiyuk and San Francisco finally agreed to a long-term extension in late August. He signed a four-year contract worth $120 million, making him one of the highest-paid receivers in football.

Aiyuk didn’t quite live up to that price in the first three weeks of the season. He has just 11 receptions for 149 yards this season and has yet to score a touchdown.

When he met with reporters earlier this week, Aiyuk said opposing defenses had a better understanding of what routes he would like to run for Brock Purdy.

“A little different,” Aiyuk said. “They just know what we want to do, what we like to do, especially me and Purdy.”

Aiyuk’s issues are just one of a few worrisome developments the 49ers experienced early in the year. Running back Christian McCaffrey is out with an Achilles tendon injury. Deebo Samuel and George Kittle also dealt with injuries and missed their Week 3 loss to the Rams. Kittle has said he will play in Sunday’s game while Samuel is listed as questionable. Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave will also miss Sunday’s game due to a triceps injury.

So if the 49ers are 1-2, the Patriots might get the reigning NFC champions at a good point in the season, what with the bizarre practice incidents and injuries.
