The City of Boston and Mayor Michelle Wu announced the grand opening of Bike Town in Moakley Park on Thursday.
Bike Town is a family-friendly place where children can practice riding and rolling in a fun and safe environment, learning how to navigate the roads safely and building their overall confidence when riding a bike.
This was unveiled as part of Mayor Wu’s “Connect, Learn & Explore” initiative, which aims to ensure that all children in Boston learn to ride a bike, swim and connect with their community through sports, gardening and the arts, the press release said.
“We are thrilled to welcome Bike Town to Moakley Park,” Wu said in a statement. “This first-of-its-kind space in Boston will provide children with the opportunity to play and socialize while teaching them how to ride a bike and basic road safety practices.”
The city says Bike Town will be located in a little-used area of Moakley Park where children can safely ride bikes.
“Moakley Park has long been a place where families come together and enjoy the waterfront in South Boston,” said Ryan Woods, Boston Parks Commissioner.
For a 9-year-old boy with autism, Christmas came early: he received a new bicycle after his was stolen.
Boston plans to expand the program next year and open bike cities in other Boston neighborhoods.
