Birmingham Airport expects passenger growth of 19.6% in 2023 amid booming travel sector and aims to expand into North America and Asia

Birmingham Airport is actively pursuing long-haul opportunities and is focused on expanding connections to key destinations in North America And Asia.

Birmingham Airport (BHX) is experiencing robust growth, with passenger numbers rising to 11.4 million in 2023, which is one 19.6% Increase compared to the previous year. BHX is located in the Midlands region of England and has a prime location. It serves a catchment area of ​​over 10 million people within an hour’s journey. This range is expected to increase further with the completion of HS2, which will reduce travel time to central London to just 37 minutes until the end of the decade.

BHX currently offers connections to over 130 destinations, with major budget and leisure airlines such as Ryanair, Jet2.com, TUI and easyJet maintaining bases at the airport. In addition, European full-service carriers such as KLM, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Air France, SAS and others have long had a presence at BHX. The airport is also a major hub for long-haul airlines with routes to the east, including Qatar Airways, Emirates, Air India and Saudia. With the aim of 18 million passengers by 2033, BHX is actively working to expand its route network, particularly to Asia and North America.

In March 2024, easyJet opened a new base at BHX with three aircraft and offers 33 routes from the city. The airline plans to launch new routes to destinations such as Hurghada in Egypt, Rovaniemi in Finland, Prague in the Czech Republic, Marrakech in Morocco, Krakow in Poland and Reykjavik in Iceland for winter 2024.

Jet2.com is preparing to launch routes to Jerez and the Costa de la Luz for its summer 2025 schedule, after adding new routes to Tivat, Bergen and Gdansk this year. SunExpress has expanded its services to Turkey, now offering 25 weekly flights from BHX to Antalya, Dalaman and Izmir. Meanwhile, Ryanair, which increased its BHX fleet to seven aircraft this summer, has launched new routes to Tirana, Paris and Derry. Turkish budget carrier Pegasus also recently increased its flights to its Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen hub.

BHX has also been selected for Lufthansa City Airlines’ inaugural flight, further expanding the popular Birmingham-Munich route.
