Bass Pro Drive in Altoona closed due to construction, detour set up

After a delay earlier this year, a road closure and detour began this week around the Des Moines Outlets at the Prairie Crossing complex in Altoona.

The city announced in a press release that a section of Bass Pro Drive Northwest, south of the Fairfield Inn & Suites entrance to the western traffic circle, will be closed starting August 26. The closure will impact direct access to the outlet mall and other businesses in the area along Bass Pro Drive.

City spokeswoman Rachel Simon said the area will be converted to a regional stormwater detention system and infrastructure for the system will have to go under the street, resulting in a partial closure. Concrete will also be replaced.

As a result of the change, smaller pools will no longer be needed in the settlement, according to city documents.

The road closure was originally scheduled to begin in May, but was delayed as workers continued to relocate infrastructure.

The detour via Bass Pro Drive follows Prairie Fire Northwest, Tallgrass Parkway Northwest and Adventureland Drive around the Prairie Crossing loop.

The closure is expected to last at least one month. Updated information will be available on the city’s website.
