“Back where we belong” – Trent Alexander-Arnold is happy about returning to the Champions League

Alexander-Arnold set up Konate’s equaliser with a beautiful free kick and told CBS Sports after the game: “Unbelievable. I think this club belongs in the Champions League with its history and it was disappointing not to be there last year.”

“But we are back where we belong and there is no better way to start this season than with a win at the San Siro – a special venue, a special stadium and an incredible result.”

The vice-captain started all five games under Slot and was asked to explain in detail what the new head coach demands from his full-backs.

Alexander-Arnold replied: “It changes. It changes fluidly throughout the games depending on how the opponent puts pressure on us, so there are a lot of tactical changes within games: where to go, where not to go, when to stay wide, when to drop back into the defensive line, when to go into midfield, when to play some kind of number 8 or when Mo (Salah) rolls inside and I’m a high winger.

“There are all sorts of variations and he gives us that information throughout the week, during the game and in the lead-up to the game. He paints scenarios so we have an answer for everything. It’s kind of like, ‘OK, if they pressure like this, we’re going to position ourselves here, and if they pressure like this, we’re going to position ourselves differently.’

“For every problem they give us, there is a solution.”
