AUSTIN, TX (1 minute read) — An incident of self-defense occurred in North Austin when a robbery escalated into a fatal shooting. On Wednesday evening, July 24, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Austin police officers were called to the Taste of Home Handmade Dumpling Restaurant, 10901 N Lamar Blvd, for a reported robbery.

The caller informed authorities of an attempted robbery with a knife and an attack on police in which he accidentally used a firearm in self-defense.

According to the investigation, the incident began when 51-year-old Hao Lin left the restaurant and encountered 57-year-old Chup Prum, who was riding a bicycle. Prum allegedly pulled out a knife and approached Lin in a threatening manner. In response, Lin drew his gun and shot Prum. After the gunshot wound, Prum managed to flee the scene on his bicycle and return home. However, his injuries were so severe that he later went to a local hospital. Prum succumbed to his injuries four days later.

In such situations, it is important to act quickly and decisively, while ensuring that the use of force is truly justified. Training in self-defense and situational awareness can make a critical difference in such encounters, potentially saving lives and preventing unnecessary casualties.
