Any airline signed up to Starlink for inflight WiFi

  • Air France announced that it will offer free ultra-high-speed Wi-Fi via Elon Musk’s Starlink from 2025.
  • United Airlines also recently signed up for Starlink.
  • Other customers also include Qatar Airways and Hawaiian Airlines.

Elon Musk’s Starlink gained another customer on Thursday as it gains popularity among airlines.

Air France announced that it will offer its customers free ultra-high-speed WiFi in every cabin from 2025. The airline described this as “a major step in its move into the upscale market”.

Musk celebrated the deal in a post on X, responding to Air France’s post by saying: “Air France installs Starlink!”

The announcement comes just two weeks after United Airlines also confirmed it would be signing on as a Starlink customer.

“Anything you can do on the ground, you can soon do aboard a United aircraft at 35,000 feet, almost anywhere in the world,” said United CEO Scott Kirby.

“This connectivity opens the door to an even better in-flight entertainment experience, in every seatback – more content that is more personal.”

Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, operates thanks to a constellation of over 7,000 satellites in low Earth orbit. This means connectivity can be provided from remote locations, such as during a transatlantic flight, which was previously more difficult to achieve.

Viasat, one of its onboard WiFi competitors, only has a handful of satellites in geostationary orbit, resulting in a longer time lag. Viasat is used by major US airlines such as Delta and American.

Back in January, it was announced that SpaceX had recently acquired a Boeing 737 with a unique gray paint job. Some photos appeared to show it had a Starlink antenna, suggesting it was used to test the system’s application to airlines.

It could be that more carriers sign up for Starlink to keep up with the competition.

At the time of Air France’s announcement, here are all the airlines that have publicly announced contracts with Starlink:

  • Air Baltic
  • Air France
  • Air New Zealand
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • JSX
  • Qatar Airways
  • United Airlines
  • Zipair
