Another big change is coming to Walmart, this time for seniors

More changes are coming at Walmart, but this time the measures will be aimed at seniors.

After closing their health centers, primary care centers are returning to retail.

CenterWell, the health services business of Humana Inc., recently announced plans to lease clinical space and open senior-focused medical care centers in 23 Walmart Supercenter stores. The openings will take place in Florida, Georgia, Missouri and Texas. The new centers will be located next to Walmart stores in clinical space previously occupied by Walmart Health.

The centers will operate under the brand names CenterWell Senior Primary Care and Conviva Care Centers and will provide seniors in these communities with greater access to primary care services tailored specifically for seniors.

“CenterWell is committed to providing seniors with quality healthcare that is accessible, comprehensive and, most importantly, personalized. We are excited about the unique opportunity to lease space from a world-class community partner like Walmart and provide seniors in these four states with greater access to our integrated care approach,” said Sanjay Shetty, MD, president of CenterWell, in the press release. “These nearly two dozen primary care centers are designed specifically for seniors, and the design of each location, including dedicated entrances and easy parking, provides patients with the access they expect from our clinics across the country. We are excited to continue to expand our mission of helping patients live happier, healthier lives.”

“We look forward to welcoming CenterWell to these purpose-built healthcare spaces to provide high-quality care to communities across four states,” said Brian Setzer, executive vice president of Walmart Health & Wellness, in the press release. “Leasing this space to a well-known and successful healthcare organization is a win for customers and patients as we continue to focus on our core health and wellness businesses of pharmacy and optical.”

The centers will be equipped and staffed with board-certified physicians, registered nurses and medical assistants who will coordinate care along with nursing consultants, social workers, behavioral therapists and clinical pharmacists.

In addition to Walmart’s in-store clinics, CenterWell will also open senior-focused primary care centers in Tampa/St. Petersburg, Orlando, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth and Kansas City.
