WT’s back-to-school job fair will take place on August 29

CANYON – The West Texas A&M University Back-to-School Job Fair will be held Aug. 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Charles K. and Barbara Kerr Vaughan Pedestrian Mall in the center of the Canyon campus.

The deadline for companies to register was August 15.

During the job fair at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, students will look for part-time employment opportunities both on and off campus.

“By connecting students with these employers during their early years of college, we foster community engagement and ultimately create a better network for our students as they enter the workforce,” said Shelby Ford, deputy director of the Office of Career and Professional Development.

Randall County Agriculture Day and Harvest Tour on August 27th in Canyon

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host the 47th annual Randall County Agriculture Day and Crops Tour on Aug. 27 in Canyon. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kuhlman Extension Center, 200 N. Brown Road. The event is free and registration is required by 5 p.m. on Aug. 23. Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units are available for private pesticide license holders, including two general units and one unit on drift minimization.

The morning session includes the following topics and speakers:

  • Weather patterns and outlook – Joanne Culin, warning coordination meteorologist, U.S. National Weather Service, Amarillo.
  • Program updates – Jeff Lewter, district conservationist, U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service, Canyon, and Samantha Dutcher, director, USDA Farm Services Agency in Randall County, Canyon.
  • Insurance programs and updates – Rachel Myers, Owner, Myers Crop Insurance, Claude.
  • In-depth look at livestock risk insurance and its benefits – David Baumann, Manager, Box Five Land and Cattle LLC, Amarillo.

The luncheon’s keynote speaker will be Josh Winegarner, director of government relations for the Texas Cattle Feeders Association in Amarillo. Winegarner will discuss cattle feeding policies and provide attendees with an outlook on the cattle market.

The afternoon sessions include two live demonstrations of the latest agricultural equipment and techniques used in agriculture. Topics and demonstrators include a demonstration of aerial herbicide application by drone with Jeff Haggard, production manager, Advanta US Inc., Canyon, and Smooth Agricultural Ranch Rover, and a demonstration of a robotic cattle feeding unit with River McTasney, CEO and co-owner, and Hunter Allemand, chief financial officer and co-owner, both of Smooth Ag Solutions Inc., Graham.

Southwest Media Group announces sale of radio stations, subject to FCC approval

PAMPA – Southwest Media Group, owner of radio stations KGRO, KOMX and KRWP, has announced that the stations have been sold, subject to FCC approval. Theater Group LLC, owned by Pampa businessmen Jason Scott and Troy Schwiegerath, recently finalized agreements for the transaction.

“We are pleased to announce the sale of these iconic radio stations to local owners,” said owner Grant Merrill. “Jason and Troy are well respected in Pampa and care deeply about the community. We are grateful to our listeners and advertisers who supported us during our time owning the station and wish the new owners nothing but the best in this new endeavor.”

Scott and Schwiegerath are the longtime owners of Cinema Four in Pampa and have other successful business interests in the area. Theater Group LLC will operate the theaters under a local marketing agreement beginning Sept. 1.

Liming and cleaning of ponds is the topic of the webinar on 20 August

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will present the webinar “Liming and Clearing Ponds” on August 20 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $35 and pre-registration is required at https://tx.ag/LimingPonds.

The keynote speaker will be Todd Sink, Ph.D., an aquaculture specialist with AgriLife Extension and an associate professor in the Division of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management. Sink is also the director of the AgriLife Extension Aquatic Diagnostics Laboratory in Bryan-College Station. There will be a 30-minute question-and-answer session at the end of the webinar.

Industry Insight Series with guest speakers from Groom, Panhandle and Claude

GROOM – State National Bank’s Industry Insight Series focusing on agriculture and urban/rural issues will feature guest speakers: Chris Furlow, CEO and President of the Texas Bankers Association (TBA), Nicholas Hoyt, Founder of Easy Newz and AiQ, Lance Ollinger, Tilley and AG & Rural Services Committee at the TBA, and Briss Vankranenburg, Owner and President of Sunrise AG.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Deke Alexander, President of State National Bank and member of the TBA Board of Directors.
