Almost record temperature again; time for much-needed rain

It’s going to be another sunny, hot day in central Indiana. Temperatures will reach record highs this afternoon. Also, the forecast is finally calling for some rain chances. The chances are slim, but we’ll take advantage of what we can get.

Temperatures will start Friday morning at a pleasant 50 to 59 degrees. In the late morning and afternoon, we’ll see the thermometer rise quickly again. Highs will be around 90 degrees. The record for this date in Indianapolis is 93 degrees, set in 1940.

Our drought has now affected the entire state of Indiana. Fire burning bans have been expanded to 62 of Indiana’s 92 counties.

We need the rain and some of us will finally get it today. A cold front is moving across the region. Before that, we expect some showers and storms in Illinois. We expect a mostly dry day, but scattered to widely scattered showers and storms are expected across the state in the late afternoon and evening. One or two storms may even include stronger gusts or hail.

Rain chances increase on Sunday with scattered showers and thunderstorms. These will continue through Monday and Tuesday. Rainfall totals may exceed 1 inch in some locations.

Fall officially begins at 8:44 a.m. on Sunday. After a very hot end to summer, temperatures next week will be more seasonal, reaching over 21 degrees.
