All Blacks’ 30-year winning streak at Eden Park under threat

Argentina’s magnificent victory over New Zealand in Wellington has thrown the 2024 Rugby Championship into disarray. The success adds extra spice to the game as the teams prepare for their reunion at Eden Park. Auckland Stadium is the unofficial national stadium of New Zealand rugby and the All Blacks have not been beaten at the stadium for 30 years.

The last time the All Blacks lost at End Park was on July 3, 1994. France won 23-20 to secure a historic test victory over the All Blacks in New Zealand. Thirty years later, Los Pumas have the chance to do the same.

In the three decades since the 1994 defeat, New Zealand have won 47 test matches at Eden Park and drawn two. Only two of the wins have come against America; the All Blacks beat Canada in 1995 and Argentina in 2011. The win over Los Pumas was a quarter-final at the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

20 of the wins in that period have come against Australia. The Wallabies are by far the All Blacks’ leading opponents at Eden Park from 1994 to 2024. In fact, France and England are in second place with 5 games against New Zealand. South Africa are not quite as successful with four losses and one draw. The British & Irish Lions also had a draw at this venue.

New Zealand’s task in the second round of the 2024 Rugby Championship is to win, putting the season back on track ahead of two games against the Springboks in South Africa. The All Blacks’ preparations will no doubt be with the aim of improving and extending their winning streak at Eden Park to 50 Test matches.
