In the Village of Algonquin, Holder Park was recently officially reopened, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve the quality of life for all residents through improved recreational facilities.

Recent improvements to Holder Park include new playground equipment, a renovated baseball backstop and fence, and an updated basketball court.

Last renovated in 1999, the playground has been completely transformed into a modern, inclusive area for children with a first responder theme.

“Holder Park is an example of our commitment to creating unique and memorable places for everyone in Algonquin to enjoy,” said Village President Debby Sosine. “This park and others under construction feature strong thematic influence and inclusivity, ensuring all children can play together in a welcoming environment.”

Holder Park is named after Algonquin Police Officer Larry Holder, who tragically died in 1982. Officer Holder drowned in Crystal Creek while heroically attempting to rescue a child who had fallen into the water during a flood.

“We believe dedicating this playground to our first responders is a meaningful tribute to Officer Holder’s legacy,” Sosine said.

In April 2021, Council approved a new 10-year Parks and Recreation Master Plan, providing the community with a comprehensive roadmap to improve and expand the community’s parks and recreation offerings.

This year alone, the village is improving 20% of Algonquin’s parkland, laying the foundation for a vibrant and active community for years to come.
