Aaron Judge, Yankees have to complain about missed opportunities as Royals upset ALDS

play

NEW YORK – Aaron Judge downplayed another missed opportunity in the first inning when the Yankees immediately had a second starter from the Kansas City Royals on the ropes.

“(It’s) a long ball game,” the Yanks captain said. “You want to get there first and give your team a head start, but…next time we’ll get them.”

On Saturday night, the Yankees still found a way to a one-run win.

A different story in Game 2 of the AL Division Series Monday night at Yankee Stadium, where the Royals bowed out with a 4-2 win and a split in this best-of-five series.

And fresh bulletin board material awaits at Kauffman Stadium, courtesy of Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr.

“We still don’t feel like any team is better than us,” said Chisholm Jr. “They just got lucky.”

The Yankees are wasting a golden opportunity

With credit for Chisholm Jr.’s outspokenness and acknowledgment of some hot prospects who landed in Royal Glove, certain realities follow the AL East champs to KC.

Aaron Boone’s club is 3 for 19 with runners in scoring position, the Juan Soto-Judge super duo has yet to drive in a run and the Royals’ once-maligned bullpen is gaining confidence through the inning.

Oh, and star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. made a difference on defense Monday, but he was 0-for-5 with three strikeouts — 0-for-10 in the ALDS — and the Royals still got it done.

Judge is 1-for-7 with two walks, one infield hit and four strikeouts – two of which come at key early spots.

On Saturday, he battled with runners in second and third without anyone dropping out and struck out against Michael Wacha.

On Monday, Cole Ragans opened with Gleyber Torres and Soto, and Judge fired through a 1-2 fastball.

Each time, the Yankees came away empty-handed, and the Yankees universe became a little more aware of Judge’s postseason numbers (by his standards).

The Yankees need their game breakers now

In the Yankees’ 2022 AL Championship Series win over the Houston Astros, Judge’s 1-for-17 with zero RBI could be attributed in part to the strenuous pursuit of 62 home runs – which is the AL single-season record – and to some unspecified physical issues .

This time, Judge appears to have arrived in October in great shape, having a great MVP-worthy regular season and Soto, one of the game’s greatest offensive threats, as his wingman.

Of course, it will require the entire ensemble — even in this postseason fastlane the Yanks find themselves in with the Astros and Baltimore Orioles gone, bye-bye.

But they’ll need their game-breakers to help the Yankees get some crooked-number innings.

“In situations like this, we have to get through it,” Judge said of the club as a whole, pointing to some hard-hit and unfortunate spots — like Giancarlo Stanton’s 109.9 mph blast that Witt Jr. turned into a double play late in the eighth .

“A couple of them fall in (then) it’s a different ball game. “That didn’t happen,” Richter said. “We have to show up in Kansas City.”

And if they do, who will be waiting but Game 3 starter Seth Lugo, who used his kitchen arsenal to beat the Yanks over seven innings and earn a win at the Stadium in September.

Carlos Rodon starts quickly, retires early

A shaky Ragans lasted only four innings and issued four walks, but he was the better lefty starter in Game 2.

Rodon came out brilliantly, hitting over the side and dodging a jam in the third inning, showing fire and emotion and making the 48,034 fans scream with him in joy.

And then Salvador Perez launched a leadoff home run in the fourth, and Rodon never made it out of the inning — he accounted for all four runs.

Perez has worn out Rodon, now with four home runs and a .464 batting average at left wing in 28 at-bats, including the postseason.

Judge had viewed Rodon’s electric fastball as the key to his fast start Monday, but the use of sliders increased – it was three sliders in a row for Perez, who fired a slider into the left field seats to make it 2-0.

Judge threatened to take a spot in the right field seats in the third, but his attempt at a two-run home run failed due to the warning trick.

“I just cut it a little. “I tried to beat (Ragans) to that point and shorten it just a little bit,” Judge said. “We can get it done to get on the field, it’s a different ball game.”
