AAA: Nationwide gasoline price falls below $3 per gallon

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — As demand for summer travel begins to decline, gas prices are also falling across Texas.

Over the past week, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in San Antonio has dropped 12 cents. This week’s price of $2.86 is slightly cheaper than last week’s average of $2.98.

The national average price of gasoline is $2.99 per gallon for regular unleaded, according to AAA, down five cents from the same day last week and 47 cents per gallon from the same day last year.

“Texans planning a Labor Day road trip will pay less at the pump than last year,” said Doug Shupe, AAA Texas representative. “AAA Texas encourages drivers to save even more on fuel costs by storing all their luggage in the car instead of using over-seat luggage racks, obeying speed limits and making sure tires are properly inflated before driving.”

Of the major Texas metropolitan areas studied, drivers in the Brownsville-Harlingen and Laredo metropolitan areas pay the most, averaging $3.05 per gallon, while drivers in Lubbock pay the least, at $2.78 per gallon.

The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is $3.38, six cents less than the same day last week and 47 cents less per gallon than the same day last year.

This is the first time since March that the national average has fallen below $3.

Oil prices have fallen for five straight days amid concerns about global demand, erasing most of the year’s gains. WTI crude is currently trading at around $72 a barrel.
