A place to call home: Chickasaw Nation inaugurates residential facility for veterans

ADA, Oklahoma – Chickasaw Governor Bill Anoatubby was there Chickasaw Veterans, tribal leaders and dignitaries at the dedication ceremony on August 14 for a neighborhood community exclusively for Chickasaw veterans.

The Tashka Inchokka’ neighborhood consists of six two-bedroom homes on West 10th Street, across from Glenwood Park. Tashka means “warrior” and Inchokka’ is “a house that belongs to them” in Chickasaw Language.

Governor Anoatubby said the housing project was an important milestone in the Chickasaw The Nation’s commitment to serve veterans and helps fulfill the Tribe’s mission to improve the overall quality of life of Chickasaw People.

“We have always had great respect for our warriors,” said Governor Anoatubby. “They are an example of strength, resilience and devotion to service and deserve the highest admiration. Their selfless actions demonstrate the fundamental values ​​of the Chickasaw People, values ​​that serve as the cornerstones of strong communities. We remain true to our commitment to serve those who fought to defend the freedoms we enjoy.”

The 1,000-square-foot homes feature modern appliances, central heat and air conditioning, fenced-in backyards and walk-in storm shelters. Mature shade trees line the street and newly landscaped walkways and driveways.

The residential area was designed as a picturesque place where Chickasaw Veterans can feel comfortable, connected and safe in a peaceful environment while enjoying the camaraderie of their fellow veterans and building meaningful relationships with their neighbors, Governor Anoatubby said.

Important services, programs and resources are easily accessible by car.

Governor Anoatubby said the housing complex was the result of years of hard work, determination and cooperation between the Chickasaw Nation Department of Community Services, including Veterans Services and Housing, the City of Ada, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

“Together we have positively changed and enhanced this area and created something truly special,” said Governor Anoatubby.

Chickasaws have served in every major war and conflict, from World War I to the most recent wars.

The Chickasaw Nation offers support and programs for Chickasaw Veterans through the Chickasaw Warrior society. Chickasaw At the Veterans Residence in Ada, veterans have access to services and community among themselves.

Governor Anoatubby told the veterans at the inauguration: “We thank our veterans for their dedication and example. You are important to our country, you are important to our tribe and we look forward to the positive impact you will have on this community.”
