A major PlayStation Network outage disrupts services on several Sony consoles

On Monday evening, PlayStation gamers experienced a widespread outage on Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN). The glitch affected multiple consoles including the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PS Vita and even older devices like the PlayStation 3. Gamers looking to enjoy their evening were left disappointed as the network outage made it nearly impossible to launch or play games on-line.

The official PSN service status page confirmed the issue and said: “You may have difficulty launching games, apps, or network features. We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience.” This notification was posted on Sony’s website after reports of connection issues came in from around the world.

Widespread issues on PlayStation devices

The outage affected everything from games to network features on PSN. Users trying to log into PlayStation Network were frustrated as they were unable to access multiplayer games or even single-player games that required online connectivity. The bug affected a variety of PlayStation devices including PS5, PS4, PS Vita and PS3. On the service page, the affected categories were listed under “Other, PS Vita, PS3, PS4, PS5, Web,” confirming the widespread nature of the issue.

One specific error that some users have encountered has been identified as “PS5 error code WS-116522-7,” which Sony’s error webpage attributed to a failure to update the system software. Players attempting to launch games or use apps were abruptly stopped and unable to continue until the network was restored. Offline games that don’t require an online connection still worked fine, providing some relief to those unaffected by the network features.

No word on the cause or resolution time

So far, Sony has not released any information about what caused the outage. Additionally, no estimated timeframe for resolving the issue was provided. The timing of the outage is particularly notable as it came shortly after Sony fixed another issue earlier in the day that affected the home screen graphics of PS5 games. This bug was fixed just hours before the network outage, but it is unclear whether the two events are related.

Players are advised to keep an eye on Sony’s updates as the company works to resolve the glitch. “We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible,” was Sony’s only update on the matter.

Players are waiting for a solution

While the outage primarily affects network-dependent games and apps, offline experiences remain functional, allowing players to enjoy single-player titles that do not require an internet connection. However, many gamers are eagerly waiting for the PlayStation Network to be fully functional again and have no clear answer as to when that will be. As Sony continues to investigate the issue, users are encouraged to remain patient and keep an eye on the PSN status page for updates on the situation. Until then, online gameplay and related features will remain disrupted across the PlayStation ecosystem.
