A 16-year-old is dead and a teenager is in custody after a stabbing in a Sandy parking lot

SANDY – Police say a 16-year-old was killed in a stabbing near State Street and 9500 South late Friday night.

The police also took a juvenile into custody.

The teen’s school district originally reported that the altercation took place at a supermarket, but Sandy police released the exact location in a news release sent Saturday.

Sandy officers were dispatched to a fight in progress in the southwest parking lot of the Mountain America Expo Center just before 9 p.m. Friday.

When Sandy police and firefighters arrived, they found the teenager stabbed to death. “He was transported to a local hospital where, despite life-saving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries,” police said.

After speaking to witnesses, the police say they were able to identify and arrest a youth in connection with the stabbing. No further details were released.

Jeff Haney, a spokesman for the Canyons School District, said the victim was a 16-year-old student at Jordan High School.

“Although this incident did not occur at Jordan High, it still impacts the JHS community, which is known for its unity. The students at Jordan High are an incredibly close-knit group,” Haney said. “It is devastating to a school community when a student is involved in a tragedy.”

Dr. Bruce Eschler, principal of Jordan High School, informed parents of the tragedy via email. He said the school would be open Saturday “for students who require the assistance of our counselors, school psychologists and social workers.”

No identities were disclosed.
