As part of its ongoing Icons series, Airbnb has created a life-sized rental version of a Polly Pocket compact toy that includes models of clothing and oversized furniture.
Located in Littleton, Massachusetts, the rental property was designed to resemble a scaled-down version of a Mattel Polly Pocket toy, a series of small plastic containers that contain different themed environments in which a doll lives.
The Airbnb property was designed in the style of a ’90s pajama party, where guests could “get ready at Polly’s dressing table,” try on clothes from the doll’s closet, hang out in the living room, and do crafts using a variety of materials provided.
“Polly Pocket becomes an Airbnb host and opens her two-story, vintage-themed Slumber Party Fun palette to celebrate her 35th anniversary,” Airbnb said. “Polly Pocket’s 42-foot-tall palette is the newest addition to Airbnb’s Icons category and takes adventure to a new level.”
The rental area consists of an open-air platform and a 12.8-meter-high rear wall modeled after an open compact car, as well as a small “tent” where guests sleep.
Visitors enter via a series of steps into a living room furnished with toy-like furniture in monochrome shades of teal, magenta and lavender-purple, arranged around a yellow rug.
Books, a telephone and other accessories are scattered around the room.
A teal door leads to Polly’s closet, which has scarves, dresses and more hanging on the back wall. There is a floor-length mirror on each side, connected by a long rug.
An entrance below the “hinge” of the compact model leads up to the two-story rear wall, which has terraces lined with pink fences that overlook the living room.
A dressing table with a drawer full of craft supplies is located on the first level next to a houseplant and a faux staircase that leads to the ceiling.
A staircase at the back of the compact car leads to the second floor, where there is a kitchen full of plain dishes, a small table and a large “refrigerator” with operable doors.
“I know what you’re thinking: ‘Polly, why is your fridge so huge?'” the Airbnb ad said. “How else am I going to store all the Ring Pops, Push Pops and Baby Bottle Pops for a slumber party?”
Outside the main structure, small round “stones” lead to a purple tent where overnight guests sleep in a row of magenta sleeping bags.
At night, the compact glows in a lavender color, but does not close.
Polly Pocket rentals are only available from September 12-14 for $89 (£70) per guest.
It’s an addition to Airbnb’s Icon collection, a series of temporary experiences and places on the platform that includes a stay in a model of the house from Pixar’s Up and a stay in the bell tower of the Musée d’Orsay during the opening of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The series was announced earlier this year and Airbnb plans to continually introduce additional rental offerings.
