Volleyball begins Elon Invitational with 3-1 win over NC Central

Elon, North Carolina (State) – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over North Carolina Central (25-13, 25-13, 22-25, 25-21) in its first game of the Elon Invitational at the Schar Center in Elon, North Carolina on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A kill of Allie sweetset by Izora Gragg gave the Spartans the first point of the game and UNCG never let North Carolina Central take the lead in the first set. With UNCG holding a five-point lead over the Eagles, the Spartans went on an 8-2 run to secure the first set 25-13.


UNCG continued its momentum in the second set, starting with a 6-2 run over the Eagles. Three consecutive points from the Spartans gave the team its second victory, 25-13.


The Spartans began the third set in control with a 5-0 run. The Eagles were able to pull the game back and tie it a few times before taking the lead for the first time (16-15). North Carolina Central was able to go on a 6-1 run to win the third set 25-22.


UNCG got back on track in the fourth set, starting with a 7-1 lead over the Eagles and never letting North Carolina Central take the lead in the final set. A final kill from Sweet gave the Spartans the fourth game, 25-21, and a 3-1 victory over the Eagles.

IN NUMBERS

  • Sweet led both teams with 23 kills, marking the second time this season he had 20 or more kills.
  • McKenna Timmerman followed closely behind with 15 kills that day.
  • Gragg was the top setter for both teams with 41 assists.
  • America Anderson And Emily Hanlon led with six blocks each. Anderson’s six blocks matched her career high, while Hanlon’s blocks set a new career high.
  • Sydney Harrington led the team with a new career high of three service aces.
  • Chloe Nussbaum As a libero, he set the pace of the game with 12 defensive actions.
