South Carolina Women’s basketball coach Daniela Staley is traveling to support the United States during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. She will be in attendance for the U.S. national team’s gold medal game against Brazil on Saturday, cheering from the stands.
Staley has placed a little more bet on the outcome of the USA vs. Brazil game, as she made a friendly bet with her former player. Camilla Cardoso. Staley announced the jersey-wearing bet on Twitter Saturday morning.
Cardoso came from Brazil to play basketball in the United States. She began her college career at Syracusebefore playing her final three seasons with Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks.
Cardoso won two national titles during her time in Columbia, including last season when South Carolina achieved a perfect 38-0 record and capped off the perfect year with a win over Caitlin Clark And Iowa in the national title game.
Cardoso was named the NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after scoring 15 points and 17 rebounds against the Hawkeyes.
Dawn Staley has been in South Carolina since 2008 and has turned the Gamecocks into a top team.
South Carolina won three national titles under Staley and reached the Final Four six times.
Suni Lee and Dawn Staley share heartwarming moment after Lee wins bronze medal
At the start of the Olympic Games in Paris, the Americans were waiting for the results of the all-around gymnastics finals. South Carolina Basketball coach Daniela Staley I also waited.
She wanted to see Suni Lee deserve a medal.
Staley tweeted this, grabbing a quick GIF of Lee and posting it with the caption: “SUNI got to work! Come get her a medal!! #ParisOlympics2024”
Lee delivered an outstanding floor routine that put her at the top of the leaderboard entering the fourth and final round. The score held long enough to give Lee a bronze medal, three years after she won gold in the all-around in Tokyo.
But when Lee sat down and checked her phone, another surprise awaited her. She saw Dawn Staley’s tweet. Suffice it to say, she was more than excited. Check it out below.
Dawn Staley wasn’t done yet, of course. She wanted Lee to know that she felt the same way.
“That’s me (fangirling) with you!” Staley wrote in response on Twitter. “Super proud of you! Love that medal smile!! Stay awesome SUNI!!!”
With her bronze medal in the all-around, Lee became the first American woman to win an all-around medal at two different Olympic Games. Moments later, her teammate, Simone Biles.
Biles, the all-around champion from Rio 2016, took the gold medal in Paris, coming on the heels of a highly successful team performance.
