‘Wordle’ #1,174 Answer, Hints and Tips for Thursday, September 5 Game

When The New York Times bought Wordle for a seven-figure sum in January 2022, it was already a worldwide hit.

The five-letter word guessing game was created by Welsh-born, Brooklyn-based software developer Josh Wardle, who developed it for his puzzle-loving girlfriend. Wardle made the game public in October 2021. Within weeks, the number of players grew from just 90 to thousands.

The game gives players six attempts to guess a five-letter word. Color-coded tiles show players if they are on the right track. A green tile means the correct letter is in the right place, while a gold tile means the letter is correct and included in the word but is not currently in the right place. A gray tile means the letter is not in the word at all.

In an interview with Newsweek In January 2022, Wardle explained how he designed the game’s format.

“There’s a reason each word is five letters long and you have six tries to guess it. This may seem arbitrary, but in the prototype version I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries players were allowed.

“Through this refinement process, I’ve found that five letters and six attempts is the ideal average. It’s just limited enough to feel challenging and thought-provoking, but most people still manage to solve it. So there’s a real sense of achievement.”

Wardle may be the game’s inventor, but he doesn’t want to tell anyone how to play the game, insisting instead that players develop their own tactics and their own five-letter starting word.

However, Wardle had a piece of advice for you that was probably not what you were expecting. In his opinion, grey tiles can help.

“One thing I have to say is that a lot of people tend to think that the game is just about finding these green and gold letters. If you find those, theoretically you have the information you need, but you shouldn’t get too hung up on that,” Wardle said. Newsweek.
