Year after year, Apple introduces new iPhone models – a ritual that excites us as technology fans, but also raises questions.
In view of pressing environmental problems and Apple’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030, the question must once again be asked whether this update cycle is timely. I still remember testing the first iPhones and how each new model brought substantial improvements. But smartphones have now largely been developed to their full potential. New things are often just an incremental improvement rather than a revolution. The production of the devices is resource-intensive, and the annual model change celebrated by Apple promotes consumption rather than longevity. A two-year cycle could be a solution – with even longer software support and a focus on recycling and reuse. But then we as users must also live up to our responsibility to act more consciously and “sit out” a new model from time to time…
