New fire station for northeast Fort Bend County

RICHMOND, TX (Katy News report) – Fort Bend County Emergency Services District 5 held a groundbreaking ceremony for the county’s newest fire station on Thursday, August 8, near the corner of Grand Mission Boulevard/Harlem Road and Beechnut Road in the unincorporated community of Richmond.

The new 225,000-square-foot facility in Richmond will include four drive-through areas for fire engines, living quarters, training rooms, offices, a conference room, a fitness room, a climbing wall and other ancillary spaces.

“This is going to be a great thing for the citizens of the district and also for Fort Bend County because it expands our response capabilities, especially for our special teams that are deployed regionally throughout the county,” said Chief Travis Baxter, pointing to the new Trillium community under construction, which is built to a master plan and is not far away.

“There will be 1,100 households, so if you assume an average of two people per household, that’s 2,200 people coming to the area,” said Shazib Iqbal, president of Fort Bend County ESD 5. “I’m just making a rough assumption; there could be four people living in one household.”

Much has changed since the department was founded in 1972, when a fire truck was stationed outside members’ homes. The new facility will be the Northeast Fire Department’s third station and will allow it to improve coverage of the 20 square miles it protects.

The department began acquiring the land in mid-2022.
