New retail store in Corpus Christi aims to make women feel beautiful

Offering 1,632 beautiful dresses for sale, Leona Lane is committed to ensuring that every woman who enters her store leaves feeling stronger than when she entered.

“My goal is to help women get a beautiful dress at a reasonable price and make them feel beautiful,” said Lane, owner of My Gown Will Go On.

The new clothing store at 1306 Ayers Street opened its doors in April. It is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The store carries sizes 0 to 24 and XS to 4X.

Lane, a Celine Dion fan, said she chose the name of her local store after the Canadian singer’s song “My Heart Will Go On.”

The dresses for sale are purchased wholesale and from overstocks from various companies, Lane said. Most are new and prices are discounted by half to three-quarters.

“I wanted to start this because I believe every woman should have a pretty dress at a reasonable price,” Lane said. “My most expensive dress is $400 and is a $1,400 piece. My dresses are about $20 and up.”

Lane is currently running a summer sale where customers can buy a dress for free up to the same price. The sale ends at the end of October.

In addition to dresses, Lane also sells high heels, jewelry, handbags and accessories. All sales are final and no exchanges or returns are possible.

“I know there aren’t many big, fancy events in town, but a girl can find her prom or quinceañera dress here for a cheaper price than anywhere else,” Lane said.

In addition to her work as a drag queen, Lane is also a well-known drag queen in the Corpus Christi community. She just celebrated her 50th anniversary in the art form and says she is also involved in community work, including with the Texas Riviera Empire – a nonprofit organization that has been raising funds for and providing medical research and education for HIV/AIDS victims for more than 35 years.

“Drag and helping my community is my true passion,” Lane said. “I’ve been doing this for 50 years and hope to do it for at least another 20. But now with My Gown Will Go On, I can help people in a new way.”
