Planning for the future: Ukiah analyzes park access for all residents

Below is a press release from the City of Ukiah:

The City of Ukiah is conducting a parking gap analysis to determine how well existing parks meet community needs and what may be needed for future parks. In addition to the staff analysis, a comprehensive community engagement process is being conducted. Community engagement includes focus groups, one-on-one interviews, surveys, event planning, and outreach to City of Ukiah commissions.

An online survey is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/EnglishParksAnalysis (English); a Spanish version is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/EspanolUkiahParques.

In addition to the online surveys, an information booth will be open for public comment at the Ukiah Pumpkinfest and an open community forum will be held at the Public Spaces Commission meeting on September 10.th at 5:30 p.m. at the Ukiah Conference Center.

The need for this analysis was identified in the city’s 2040 General Plan, which states that the city “should conduct a parking gap analysis that identifies areas of the city that do not have adequate parks and recreational facilities.” In addition, the “analysis should establish at least equitable access standards, including minimum distance between parks and each residential building, and possible funding mechanisms.” This will help the city of Ukiah prepare for population growth, demographic changes, and potential incorporations.

The process includes mapping exercises, identifying appropriate service measures and goals for the city’s park system. Recreational opportunities and needs will also be assessed. Finally, the document will address potential funding opportunities.
