According to transportation officials, one person died at the Downtown Berkeley BART station on Wednesday evening.
At about 5:46 p.m., a person was struck inside the yellow safety lines as a train approached the station, BART spokesman Jim Allison said. BART statements described the incident as a “serious medical emergency,” a term the transit agency uses for suicide attempts.
Further information about the person was not released late Wednesday.
Allison said the Alameda County Coroner’s Office is on scene.
The Downtown Berkeley station was closed after the collision and service between the North Berkeley and MacArthur stations was suspended for part of the evening commute. Normal service later resumed and the Downtown Berkeley station reopened shortly after 9 p.m.
