What should other retailers learn from the Walmart+ and Burger King collaboration?

Walmart+ has launched its first food benefit as part of a new partnership with Burger King. Starting now, Walmart+ members will receive 25% off all digital orders placed through the Burger King app or website. In addition, they will receive a free Whopper with every purchase every three months starting next month.

Pat O’Toole, Burger King’s chief marketing officer, praised the collaboration in Walmart’s press release, emphasizing the alignment of both companies’ value-based approaches. Venessa Yates, senior vice president and general manager of Walmart+, emphasized that the new benefit underscores Walmart+’s commitment to increasing the value and usability of membership.

To access these benefits, members must link their Walmart+ account to their Burger King Royal Perks account through the BK app or website. The discount and quarterly Whopper deal are available at participating stores.

“Adding a Burger King benefit to our Walmart+ membership portfolio is exciting. We continually strive to offer benefits that are focused on our members and align with our commitment to providing undeniable value and convenience. We’re confident our members will welcome the additional savings, and we’re excited to partner with a trusted brand like Burger King to offer this benefit.”

Regarding its decision to partner with Burger King, the company stated that the benefits are selected based on member insights and “carefully crafted to provide members with a unique and valuable experience.”

According to Food & Wine, the partnership is good for Walmart, but Burger King could benefit even more as the company “urgently needs to lure customers back into its stores.” In August, Restaurant Brands International, Burger King’s parent company, said during a conference call that the fast-food chain’s second-quarter sales fell 0.1% and that sales were expected to remain sluggish.

The Progressive Grocer called this a “first-of-its-kind partnership,” adding that Walmart says this new benefit is designed to help members save time and money, and adapt to their busy lifestyles where grocery shopping, meal planning, and cooking aren’t always practical. As EnterpriseAppsToday reports, the majority of Americans eat fast food “at least 1 to 3 times per week,” so this benefit could be especially beneficial for those who already have Walmart+ and could convince those who don’t to join.

However, an article on The Ascent explained why, despite all the special perks, a Walmart+ membership isn’t the right choice for everyone. Financial writer Maurie Backman gave three reasons why she decided against a Walmart+ membership: She already has an Amazon Prime membership with free two-day shipping, she has a Costco membership that helps her save on gas, and she doesn’t personally need access to another streaming service—in this case, Paramount+.

The official Walmart+ website currently lists the following included Walmart+ perks:

  • Burger King Savings: 25% off digital orders every day in participating stores.
  • Free delivery from store: $0 delivery fee on groceries and more with a minimum order of $35.
  • Free shipping with no minimum order value: Shipping is free on eligible items and there is no minimum purchase required.
  • Fuel savings for members: Save 10¢ per gallon at over 14,000 locations nationwide.
  • Video streaming with Paramount+: Access over 40,000 episodes, movies and live sports with a Paramount+ subscription.
  • Car care: Free tire repair and road hazard warranty at Walmart Auto Care Centers.
  • Walmart+ Travel: Earn up to 5% Walmart Cash on travel bookings through Expedia.
  • Returns from home: Plan returns from home without having to print or repack anything.
  • Early access: Get early access to special product releases and online offers.
  • Mobile scanning and getting started: Shop and pay in stores with your phone.
