Zion National Park expects a busy Labor Day weekend

Authorities are expecting a busy Labor Day weekend in Zion National Park.

Anyone planning to visit from Friday, August 30th to Monday, September 2nd should expect long lines and traffic in and around the park.

“Be prepared and be patient,” the park said in a press release.

Because parking spaces are limited and often fill up quickly, the park recommends parking in Springdale and taking the free Springdale shuttle directly to the park’s pedestrian entrance.

In addition, the park asked people to park only in designated parking spaces, never on unpaved areas and especially not over vegetation to avoid both parking tickets and forest fires.

Because fire restrictions are in place, the park advises visitors that lighting, building, maintaining, operating or using open fires that produce ash is prohibited.

“Stoves powered by petroleum or liquid propane gas (LPG) intended exclusively for food preparation are permitted,” the press release states.

Smoking in vegetated areas is also prohibited, according to the park, except in enclosed vehicles or on a landscaped recreational site or in an area without vegetation that is at least one meter in diameter.

High temperatures and flash flooding are possible, so the park asks visitors to check the weather forecast.

“Even small amounts of rain can cause flooding in canyon areas,” the press release states. “Avoid canyons when rain is forecast.”

In addition, the park recommends drinking 3.8 liters of water daily and packing salty snacks to avoid heat-related illnesses.
