Blaine County business offers convenience and community spirit

DUNNING, Nebraska (KOLN) – In Dunning, The Spur is more than just a place to eat – it’s a family-run eatery where visitors can find everything from leather gloves to handmade pottery.

“It’s a gas station, a grocery store, a restaurant and a bar,” said co-owner James Swisher. “Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays we have senior day.”

The Spur also offers meals on wheels to seniors in the community and delivers meals to those who cannot visit the restaurant.

The Spur is particularly known for its breakfast special, the “Spur Sandwich,” which includes ham, sausage, bacon, eggs and two slices of cheese on a hot bun. “It’s all going really well for us and the customers,” James said.

Burgers are also a big part of the menu. “We have burgers and we have what we call a ‘Cowboy Burger’ and that comes with jalapeno cream cheese and we have a lady from Thedford who makes our jalapeno sauce that people just crave,” James said.

The business is a true family-run business, with several members of the Swisher family involved. The Spur opened about two years ago, after a pivotal moment for co-owner Jodi Swisher.

“I worked at the 4-H camp,” Jodi said. “It burned down, and when it burned down, this opportunity came up. We took it. I’ve always wanted to bake, cook and run a restaurant.”

Jodi is the creative force behind the menu. “My wife Jody is the heart and soul of the company,” said James.

“That’s my motto. If I don’t eat it, I don’t serve it. It has to be something that tastes good, and if it doesn’t, you don’t get it,” Jodi said. “Tuesdays we have fried chicken. Thursdays we have our spicy beef. It’s just something we have every week, and it’s homemade.”

In addition to groceries, The Spur’s small grocery store offers a variety of items, from leather gloves to locally made pottery. The Swishers also produce their own beef, which is available individually or in bulk.

“You can buy it by the piece in the freezer there,” James said. “If you want a half or a whole cow, we can make that for you. Everything that goes into hamburgers is USDA-sealed and all of our beef is raised on our own.”

Ice cream and other treats are also popular at The Spur.

“If people want something, we try to get it for them to help them,” James said. Locals say this business is good for Blaine County.”

“People come from all over and I’m really surprised,” Jodi said. “It’s because of word of mouth. They come in and just watch each other visit each other and are part of each other’s coming together and that’s what I really enjoy.”

Next time you’re traveling through Dunning, stop by The Spur.

“We’ve lived here in Dunning forever, you know,” said James. “It’s been 26 years since there’s been a bar or cafe in this town. It’s something we love to do.”
