Huskies finish second, Breon shoots career best of 78

LEWISTOWN – In its first home game of the golf season, Mifflin County took advantage of the opportunity to play at Lewistown Country Club on Monday afternoon.

The Huskies surged to secure second place in the Mid-Penn game, one stroke behind first place Mechanicsburg.

Leading the Huskies was Evan Breon, who scored a personal best of 78 points. His All-Star performance was also enough to take first place in the game’s overall scoring.

“I think I did my best today and pushed myself mentally. I don’t think I could have left as much behind as I did today. I gave it my all.” Said Breon. “This is the best match I’ve ever played and I’m thrilled with my performance today. The fact that I won the match is crazy.”

Breon’s play certainly received a lot of positive feedback on the pitch.

“I’m proud of the kid. He’s been here every day this summer, working hard and finally showing himself. I’m really proud of him. He played well today and I’m just glad he finally showed what he can do.” Said the strong golfer Colby Seiler.

“I couldn’t be prouder of Evan for shooting so much today. It’s incredible,” Huskies coach Aaron Bubb added.

Seiler and Jackson Flood both scored 81s, giving them fourth place overall. Jace Rishel added an 89, giving him 19th place overall.

“Our team total of 329 today was the best result of our season and the best team result we have achieved in my 12 years as coach,” Bubb noted.

The Huskies have prepared for strong days like Monday. Bubb explained his team’s training habits.

“We often play nine-hole shots… We start at 100 yards. They drop the ball at the 100-yard mark and have to hit 36 or better twice on nine holes from 100 yards. When they do that, I move them back to 150 (yards) twice and they go back to 200 twice until they finally come all the way back to the tees. Practicing the short game is crucial because that’s where you score points, around the greens.” Said Bubb.

The Huskies went 5-1 on the day and are now 16-8 overall and 16-8 in the Mid-Penn Keystone Division. MC will play at home again on Thursday when they host East Juniata, Newport and Millersburg.

After coming close to first place in the Mid-Penn game, second place gives the Huskies new momentum going forward.

“I’m really looking forward to playing on Thursday and seeing how it goes. It’s really exciting,” Flood said.

The Huskies’ girls golf team also competed at Lewistown Country Club. Emma Norman scored a personal best of 115 points to place seventh overall. Lily Breon scored 122 points to place eleventh overall.

The MC girls team will compete at Mayapple Golf Course in Carlisle next Wednesday.
