Important points:

  • AFIA has released its “Our Industry, Our Promise” report, which provides a detailed overview of the U.S. animal feed and pet food industry’s contribution to the national and global economy while highlighting the operational challenges facing manufacturers.

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) today released its annual report, Our Industry, Our Promise, which describes the operational challenges facing U.S. feed and pet food manufacturers and the actions AFIA is taking to address them. The report analyzes the pet food industry’s contribution to the U.S. and global economy and the forces creating an uncertain business climate. It also provides insight into ongoing efforts to bring federal pet food regulation into the 21st century and the steps the industry is taking to better protect animal and human health while producing safer, more sustainable food.

“We owe a huge debt of gratitude to AFIA members and employees for their commitment to our industry and for encouraging us to continue to improve and innovate. Our future is bright and will be even brighter with your participation,” said Carlos González, AFIA Board Chair for 2023-24 and Vice President of Global Regulatory Affairs at Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc.

The report focuses on the work completed during AFIA’s fiscal year from 1 May 2023 to 30 April 2024 and includes sections on the following topics:

  • The business climate for U.S. pet food manufacturers, including addressing domestic supply chain challenges, resolving discrepancies between state and federal regulations, and advocating for modernized pet food labels.

  • Animal food safety, including preparing production facilities for routine inspections by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), protecting against potential outbreaks of animal disease, protecting the health of workers, and requiring the continued safe use of formaldehyde in pig and poultry feed.

  • Global policy challenges, including advocating for sound international policies at the national level and in global forums, holding U.S. trading partners to accountability, and opening new markets for U.S. animal feed exporters in key countries.

  • Industry progress on sustainability, including advocating for the animal feed industry in international dialogues, demonstrating how feed can provide a solution to global food security and climate challenges, and equipping members with the resources needed to deliver on the sustainability promises of their customers and stakeholders.

The report also provides an update on AFIA’s professional networking and educational offerings, recognizes several industry award winners, and celebrates the ways the association gives back to local communities and engages in social media.
