Complex drilling in Iran’s largest independent gas field goes into operation

Iranian technicians and engineers begin production of a complex well in the Kish gas field.

Iran’s Oil Ministry said local engineers and technicians had finally completed drilling a complex gas well in the country’s largest independent gas field.

The ministry said in a report on its news website on Sunday that gas production from the seventh well in Phase 1 of the Kish gas field began after a difficult and complicated operation that relied on the technological innovations and expertise of Iranian companies.

The Kish gas field is located near Kish Island in Iranian territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. Production from Phase 1 of the field is expected to reach approximately 28.3 million cubic meters per day once all 14 wells in this phase are brought online.

A contractor said the seventh well in the Kish gas field is the most complicated of all the wells in the field due to its unique geological structure and reservoir pressure.

Abdollah Mehrabi of the National Iranian Drilling Company said the opening of the well would allow Iran to finally tap into its largest independent gas reserves after years of delays in development.

Mehrabi said the development work at the Kish gas field had been awarded to Pars Oil and Gas Company, a domestic company responsible for some of the country’s key oil projects.

He said another seven wells in the field will soon be brought into operation once contractors build the pipelines and facilities needed to supply gas from the field to refineries in Asaluyeh on the Persian Gulf coast.

The successful commissioning of the gas well in Kish is another sign that Iran is increasingly dependent on domestic companies in the face of sanctions that restrict access to foreign know-how and investment.

Iranian oil and gas companies have performed well in many projects since the United States imposed sanctions on the country in 2018 following its withdrawal from an international agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.
