Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, the song says, and she would have to be a super rich lady to own one.

They are the most expensive earrings ever offered at auction in the world and are expected to fetch at least £55 million.

The undisputed star of the auction held by Sotheby’s in Geneva is Apollo, a “truly exceptional” 14.54 carat Fancy Vivid blue gemstone.

Due to its rarity, the stone is valued at £40 million. His twin, Artemis, is a 16 carat fancy intense pink diamond worth £14.5 million.

The stones are currently set into a spectacular pair of earrings, but are being offered separately due to their “extreme rarity, power and presence.”

According to David Bennett, Chairman of Sotheby’s International Jewellery Division, this is “by far the most significant pair of earrings ever offered at auction”.

He added: “These exquisite colored diamonds are extremely rare and each one is a wonderful stone in its own right.

“Together they are stunning as a pair of earrings. We named them after Apollo and Artemis, a twin brother and sister of great power and beauty who were among the most revered deities of ancient Greece.”

The earrings are part of the Auction “Magnificent Jewels and Precious Jewels” on May 16 in Geneva.
