Man found dead in parking lot of gas station in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WIAT) – A man was found dead in the parking lot of a Birmingham gas station early Saturday morning.

According to Birmingham police officer Truman Fitzgerald, officers were called to a ShotSpotter alert in the 1100 block of Third Avenue West around 2:40 a.m. Officers arrived at the Exxon gas station on that block and found an unconscious man lying in the parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and EMS officials pronounced the man dead. Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation revealed that ShotSpotter detected gunshots in the 1100 block of Third Avenue West.

The gas station was closed when the shooting occurred, but the El Centenario Nightclub across the street was open at the time. Detectives with the Birmingham Police Department will be searching the area for surveillance cameras.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the BPD at 205-254-1764 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. Crime Stoppers can offer a reward of up to $5,000 to tipsters.
