As a picky fashion editor, I’m always on the lookout for the latest trends, but I also like to avoid outdated pieces that no longer have a place in our closets. This fall, it’s time to say goodbye to certain pieces that we used to associate with the season but are now a thing of the past. The obvious answers might be overly worn denim, which feels more dated, than bold and chunky statement necklaces that scream 2010 rather than 2024, but I decided to ask my colleagues and fellow fashion editors what I might be missing here.
They convinced me that I should choose timeless elegance and valuable items instead of clinging to these outdated trends. This fall is all about embracing a more refined, elegant aesthetic, so I’m making room for new pieces while keeping their comments in mind.

Adopt: Sublime Animal Print
“I would say that the bright reds are starting to look a bit over the top. I will definitely keep red in my wardrobe and never stop wearing it, but I’m shifting my focus away from it. If I want to make a statement instead, I’ll go for an elevated animal print moment.”

Skip: Oversized Blazers
Adopt: Hourglass Silhouettes
“This fall, I won’t be updating my collection of oversized blazers. Instead, I’ll be looking for fitted blazers with a cinched waist that create an hourglass shape. These styles were showcased on the fall 2024 runways at shows like Jil Sander, Bottega Veneta and Toteme. Since I normally wear black, I’m looking to expand my wardrobe to include bright red and deep brown options.”

Helsa
S Curve jacket made from recycled twill
Skip: Wide leg pants
Adopt: Cigarette Pants
“Believe me – I’ve worn a fair amount of wide-leg pants, but I don’t like the shape as much these days, especially in the fall when I want to wear boots with everything. Instead, I only buy pants with a tighter, straighter silhouette. In my opinion, they look better with tight-fitting ankle boots, but also with all kinds of loafers, flats or kitten heels.”

Skip: High-Rise Sneakers
Adopt: Low-rise styles
“I won’t be buying high-rise sneakers this fall. I love all the cool low-rise sneaker styles that are coming out right now. I think they look more classy and can be worn with a variety of pieces, including jeans, dress pants, maxi skirts and more.”

Skip: Motorcycle Jackets
Accept: Funnel Neck Styles
“Motorcycle jackets are a typical fall piece that won’t be on my shopping list this season. Instead, I’m interested in the funnel-neck styles we’ve spotted all over the Fall 2024 runways, from the shiny cape versions in Chemena Kamali’s debut collection at Chloé to Burberry’s canvas trench coat versions. I can’t help but be drawn to how chic these high-neck silhouettes look with just about anything, and I know having a jacket like this in my closet will be the perfect fall outfit.”

Skip: Suede over-the-knee boots
Adopt: Block heel boots
“I’m not a fan of suede over-the-knee boots. Instead, I look for leather boots with block heels that reach below the knee, like Reformation’s Frances Boots ($498). (Side note: Don’t miss Reformation’s excellent shoe department.) I’ll be pairing the boots with everything from breezy dresses to straight-leg jeans.”

Skip: Collarless Coats
Adopt: Funnel collar coats
“One of my favorite things about autumn is that you Finally Outerwear is a trend, and there’s a lot to be excited about. While there have been some incredibly sophisticated trends over the past few seasons that I’ve been obsessed with, I’m ready to move on from collarless coats. The more minimalist silhouette doesn’t excite me, especially when compared to dramatic funnel collar coats. I love this trend because a higher neckline makes even the simplest jackets seem bolder – see the FW24 collections from Burberry, Ferragamo, Proenza Schouler and Bevza for proof.”

High-necked wool-blend coat
Skip: Red tights
Adopt: Column Skirts
“My red tights have been a perennial favorite, but I’m ready to move on to a more elegant trend: column skirts. I plan to wear them with oversized sweaters and pointy-toe flats and kitten heels.”
