The public is invited to a free seminar on the opioid epidemic at the Centralia College TransAlta Commons on Wednesday, August 28.

According to a press release, the event will focus on both the opioid epidemic and the impact of social media on addiction.

“We live in an ever-changing world of drugs and technologies that affect everyone,” event organizers said in a press release. “Attend this seminar to learn about and discuss this constant evolution. Take home information, resources and contacts.”

The Centralia Police Department, Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, Chehalis Police Department, Napavine Police Department, Lewis County Public Health and Social Services, Cascade Community Healthcare and the Chehalis and Centralia School Districts have joined forces to host the event.

The seminar includes a 90-minute lecture by Stephanie Siete, a nationally known educator in the field of drug addiction, drug prevention and education.

According to a press release from Centralia Police, the presentation will address the dangers of fentanyl, counterfeit pills, e-cigarettes and other addictive substances.

“Ms. Siete will share her knowledge of the intersection of substance abuse and social media and how today’s youth use smartphone apps to connect with drug dealers. She will also address the highly addictive nature of social media itself,” the Centralia Police Department said in a press release.

One presentation will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., a second presentation from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
