Local restaurant replaces chain that fed Boise residents for decades at busy intersection

A popular eatery at one of the Boise area’s busiest intersections will soon be serving burgers again.

Local Big Bun Drive-In has purchased the former Carl’s Jr. building at 4999 W. Glenwood St., near the corner of Glenwood Street and Chinden Boulevard.

The 3,721-square-foot Garden City restaurant will be a second Big Bun, according to Julie Kissler, senior associate at Summit Commercial Real Estate Group. The target opening date is November, but that depends on permits, she said.

Before closing last year, Carl’s Jr. was a longtime anchor of the Glenwood City Center complex. According to a real estate listing, the building was constructed in 2003.

Big Bun has been in Boise for several decades. In May, its sole location at 5816 W. Overland Road celebrated its 70th anniversary in the Treasure Valley.

“We are one of the first drive-in restaurants here in the valley,” Big Bun co-owner Tyler Kellogg told the Idaho Statesman a few days before the celebration.

Looking for a menu recommendation when the new store opens?

“For people just moving to the valley, our homemade finger steaks are a great option,” Kellogg said. “We take a USDA Choice flank steak, trim the fat, cut it into strips, marinate it for three to five days, then bread and fry it in our homemade buttermilk batter.

“And then of course all of our burgers, but we have a bloody sauce burger, a blueberry blue cheese bacon burger. It’s really good.”
