What you should know

  • 7th Annual Los Angeles Black Restaurant Week
  • August 23 – September 1, 2024
  • Numerous restaurants in Southern California are participating, including The Vegan Joint

An unforgettable dining experience that begins vibrantly in one city quickly pops up in other locations and then, meal after wonderful meal, becomes an annual fixture in those locations within a few years.

That’s the story of Black Restaurant Week, which began in Houston in 2016. The first restaurant event, which spotlighted several local black-owned businesses, was a success; soon after, the event was successfully replicated in over a dozen cities and regions across the country, including Los Angeles.

The 2024 Southern California celebration kicks off on August 23 with numerous participants including The Vegan Joint, Blaqhaus North Hollywood and Camille’s Culinary Creations.

For the full list of 2024 restaurants, visit the Los Angeles Black Restaurant Week website.

Celebrating the flavors of African American, African and Caribbean cuisine, Black Restaurant Week is billed as “More than just a week”; it is a way to meaningfully support “the culinary contributions of Black-owned restaurant establishments” at a time when the restaurant industry is facing numerous challenges.

“Since 2016, we have strived to differentiate ourselves from similar organizations,” explains Falayn Ferrell, Operations Managing Partner of Black Restaurant Week, LLC.

“BRW is run entirely by business owners and operators. They are on the front lines every day, experiencing the ups and downs of running a business during one of the most difficult times in U.S. history.”

And while many people participate in the appetizing event by visiting one or more restaurants during the 10-day foodie fest that takes place in Los Angeles from August 23 to September 1, there are other ways to participate in Black Restaurant Week.

You’ll find several recipes to make at home, including Rainbow Pancakes from Chef B’s Casa and Essie Spice Tamarind Wings.
