Attention, attention, attention, attention! Man-eating plants from outer space have been spotted near Ogunquit, Maine, according to Howard Ashman and Alan Menkens Little Shop of Horrors begins performances at the Ogunquit Playhouse on August 22. Hunter Foster (who starred in the musical’s Broadway premiere in 2003) directs the production, which will run through September 21.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Star Latrice Royale leads the production as Audrey II and shares the stage with Etai Benson (The band’s visit) as Seymour, Talia Suskauer (Evil) as Audrey, Adam Heller (Some like it hot) as Mr. Mushnik, Edward Watts (The Book of Mormon) as Orin Scrivello, Chelsea Hooker (hair) as Crystal, Briana Brooks (Nice) as Ronette and Olivia Elease Hardy (Kimberly Akimbo) than chiffon.

The company is rounded out by ensemble members Nick Davis, Joseph Ryan Harrington and Jackson Kanawha Perry as well as understudy members Ray DeMattis, Diva LaMarr, Amirah Joy Lomax and Christian Probst.

With a book and lyrics by Ashman and music by Menken, Little Shop of Horrors is based on Roger Corman’s wacky horror film with a screenplay by Charles Griffith and is about a man-eating plant that begins its campaign to destroy the world in a small flower shop in a slum area. The musical version premiered off-Broadway in 1982 and quickly became a worldwide hit. It was brought to the big screen in 1986, first performed on Broadway in 2003 and is currently being revived off-Broadway.

This 2003 Broadway version, in which director Foster starred as Seymour, appears to return in some capacity for Ogunquit’s production, particularly through Scott Pask’s original set design. The Ogunquit creative team, otherwise unaffiliated with the Broadway production, also includes choreographer Mara Newbery Greer, music director Dan Pardo, additional scenic designer Nate Bertone, lighting designer Richard Latta, costume designers Dustin Cross and Bryce Turgeon, sound designer Kevin Heard, and wig, hair, and makeup designer Roxanne De Luna. Rebecca McBee serves as production stage manager and Veronica Aglow as assistant stage manager.

Ogunquits Little Shop of Horrors is presented under a special agreement with Music Theatre International.

Tickets are available at OgunquitPlayhouse.org.
