All Things Carmel specialty store on Main Street closes • Current Publishing

All Things Carmel, a specialty store operated by a nonprofit organization in the Carmel Arts & Design District, closed on August 20.

The store is operated by Promote Carmel, Inc., a nonprofit organization founded in 2020 by former Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard. It was funded by revenue from the city’s general fund, which in turn is funded by property taxes and income taxes.

A recent analysis of the store’s finances found that due to commitments made by the previous administration, an additional $100,000 would be needed this year to fund the nonprofit, in addition to the $200,000 grant in Brainard’s last budget. After discussions with Promote Carmel’s board, the city decided to redirect the funds granted to the nonprofit toward other important priorities.

“Inflation and the higher cost of living have forced Carmel taxpayers to tighten their belts. It is my responsibility to do the same with our city budget,” Mayor Sue Finkam said in a press release. “While the program has been a vibrant asset to the Carmel Arts & Design District, today’s fiscal climate requires that we prioritize important expenses such as police and fire personnel and street maintenance.”

The Promote Carmel Board of Directors informed employees of the decision on August 20.

“This deal was a labor of love for many people,” said Tim Griffin, Chairman of the Board of Promote Carmel. “The management of Promote Carmel, Inc. and the City of Carmel thank them for their support.”
