Food stamps: 19 states will pay out up to ,751 in SNAP benefits this week

As August draws to a close, residents in 19 states and territories can expect to receive their food stamps by Sunday at the latest.

The funds, worth up to $1,751 for a household of eight, are loaded onto an Electronic Benefits Transfer card, which functions as a debit card and can be used at any supermarket or grocery store that accepts the benefits. To qualify for SNAP, household income must be 130 percent of the poverty level or less — $2,072 per month or $32,328 per year. Benefits are paid over a one-year period.

States do not distribute funds on one day, but in some cases over the entire month.

A single recipient is entitled to a monthly allotment of $291.

Each state, county and territory administers and distributes benefits differently. Some make payments based on the applicant’s number, while others pay according to the first letter of the applicant’s last name.
